“When working out a composition - I look for bold contrast between shadow and light, a distinct characteristic or essence from the sitter, and strong design elements. Setting out the paints, mixing color, and figuring out exactly what I am seeing is very meditative. The subjects become very familiar to me as I deconstruct their physical forms and rebuild them again on 2d canvas. My representational work takes on a life of its own. There is something joyful in creating a set of moments... my moments. Unlike a photograph that freezes its image with the click of a shutter, my paintings capture a liveliness derived from my experience of the sitter or object for the duration that it takes me to paint it - which can be a few hours, a few months, and sometimes even years.” -- Nancy Cuevas
Nancy was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. She taught herself how to draw and paint at a very young age. Her parents provided plenty of crayons, coloring books, a large chalk board, and multi-color chalk to keep her busy. As an immigrant family they could not afford much else. Her parent’s saved enough money to open a small taco shop when she was eleven. She remembers drawing at the register as she worked after school and weekends to help out. She went on to attend Art Center in Pasadena, while still in high school and Otis Parson School of Design in Los Angeles, CA after graduating in 1987. She landed her first art job painting billboards for display along the famous Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. This enabled her to lose any fear of painting large scale.
Nancy married, started a family, and moved to Patterson, California in 1991. She later continued her art studies at Cogswell Polytechical in Sunnyvale, California. In 2003, she, her two boys and husband, moved to Oregon where she took up painting again. She studied figure and portraiture in oils under Portland artist Alexander Rokoff. After four years of study, assisting with workshops and teaching, Nancy moved her studio close to home to develop her own style as an artist and painter.
Nancy’s representational work varies from large, life size figures and portraits to small still life and animals. Her favorite subjects to paint are her two sons, two beagles, and three cats. Nancy donates 10% of her art print sales to The Humane Society of America.
Nancy has been teaching drawing and oil painting for five years in small groups and private lessons. She recently opened a new teaching studio in Hillsboro called Cuevas Art Studio www.cuevasartstudio.com.
