Paints and Mediums
Your choice of Fluid Acrylics – Golden, Holbein & Blick are a few brands to check out
• 3-5 small bottles – 3.5ml if this is a new medium for you
— My favorite Fluid Acrylics include Holbein:
• Quin Magenta
• Quin Gold
• Pthalo Blue
• Titanium White
• Marigold
— My favorite Acrylics for sky and aqua in a tube include:
• Holbein Compose Blue No. 2 • Holbein Compose Blue No. 1
• Daler-Rowney Florescent Water-Resistant Artists Ink, 1 oz
(Yellow, Pink, Blue, Green, Red or Orange — Pick one or two in lighter values)
• Fluid Matte Medium such as by Golden or Liquitex
• Bring White Gesso if you have it (Blick or similar)
Misc.
• Caran D’Ache white water soluble crayon
• Assorted color pencils, pencil, eraser
• Fine Black Sharpie
• 6 pieces high quality Watercolor Paper 11”x15”
• 4-6 pieces of Student grade Watercolor Paper 11”x15” – If you have some
• Tracing paper 11” x 14” preferred size
• Brushes Made for Acrylics or older brushes *Don’t bring your good watercolor brushes
— My favorites include a 1” flat brush, #14 filbert #4 Filbert #1 detail brush
• Brush Cleaner such as The Masters Brush Cleaner and Preserver
• Small bottle alcohol
• Water bucket or pail 1-2 gallon
• 1-3 Plastic containers with lids (flat box to go containers with lids work well) or Masterson Sta-Wet Super Pro Palette Set with film & sponge if you already have one
• A few Stencils that you have already
• A Board for watercolor paper to keep paper flat and tacked down. Gatorboard works well
• Artist Tape or Bulldog clips to keep watercolor paper in place
• Small Spray bottle filled with water
• Paper towels or rags
• Several pieces of Collage Paper that you may already have
• T-Square if you have one
• Triangle ruler if you have one (Blick Transparent Triangle – 12″, 45-90 Degree works well)
• Thin rubber gloves to protect your hands from gesso and from thicker media
• Small notebook or journal for notes and sketching
• Anything else you would like to bring
Instructor Biography
Laura Leiman is a retired commercial artist and has worked as a designer & branding specialist for various corporations. She specializes in the experimental use of watercolors, acrylics, gesso, gels, & photography. Her artwork uses rich color, texture & pattern to uniquely emphasize her subjects.
Leiman is a graduate of Art Center College of Design, in Pasadena, California, and a graduate of the School of Journalism, University of Oregon, In Eugene, Oregon. She is a member of the Watercolor Society of Oregon, and a board member of the Village Gallery of Arts in Portland, Oregon.
