Class Description:

Learn how to focus on parts of your flowers to make wonderful art. Georgia Okeefe is the first artist that comes to mind when you think of close up flower paintings and she was a master.  Many artists today take their photos and zero in to make exciting compositions.

Some go so far that it becomes more abstract.  In this class we will move beyond the expected.

We’ll start with this beautiful dahlia photo and each person will crop it to make their own unique painting.

I’ll show you how to move around your photo (or real life) using a cropping device to make many interesting painting from just one shot.

I’ll be painting in watercolor, but other mediums are fine.

We will be talking a lot about using hard and soft edges, getting cohesion in your paintings with a simple trick in the beginning of the painting process, moving around the flower to get interesting shots, color tones to use, mixing and using greens.

I’ll also be demonstrating wet into wet, blending, glazing and many other techniques.

This is a longer than normal class to allow time to cover a lot of material and to get a lot of painting done.

Instructor: I’ve been teaching in Arizona and Oregon for over15 years, primarily in watercolors.  I love teaching new watercolor students.  There is something so wonderful about seeing them feel that first time of losing themselves in painting and the joy that it brings, they always grow, their own style develops, and it is such an honor to be part of all that.  I want to teach you “how” to paint, not to mimic me.  We may all use the same methods and subject matter, but when you finish my goal is to have shown you what to do on your own when you are painting.  My attitude is that every class should be a lot of fun, please come paint with me.

Normal painting supplies are required.  Please bring a prepared painting surface that will allow you to paint large enough that you aren’t fiddling but not so large that you can’t finish.

Somewhere between 7-9” for each edge of your surface would be good.

I will send an email with more specific supplies that I will use.  These are certainly not necessary.

Use what you have.  You don’t have to make this the color shown.  You will be given a black and white photo at class.
