Class Details:
Gongbi is a careful realist technique in Chinese painting, the opposite of the interpretive and freely expressive xieyi( freestyle) style. The name is from the Chinese gong jin meaning ‘tidy’. You will learn the basic techniques of Gongbi Chinese Brush Painting and I will give individual instruction, tips and ideas.
Please bring with you:
A drawing on size A4 paper of an image you would like to paint. Only the outline of the image. No shading. Use a black fine liner/ ink pen.
Two jars for water
Three or four small white ceramic dishes for ink mixing. (Ramekin/soufflé dishes work best!)
A roll of Kitchen paper towel!
Two small paper weights or any 2 small objects to act as paper weights.
Xuan paper (Chinese rice paper) will be provided.
White felt and Chinese brushes will be available to use but if you have your own please bring them with you. A gongbi brush ( very thin brush ) will be used throughout the class.
About the Artist:
Joanna Brown relocated to Portland from England in 2020. She is an experienced teacher and artist. She taught art in schools in England for 20 years and created ArtFlow, an art group, which offered children a creative space to explore and expand their artistic flare. Joanna is a practicing artist, specializing in Chinese Brush Painting, Sumi-e Painting and Watercolor. She is a Classified Special Needs Teacher in a Middle School in Hillsboro.
