Class Details: Sumi-e means black ink painting. Using black ink and creating a white space on the paper, you will paint spontaneously to capture the spirit of nature. The focus of the art of sumi-e painting is on the quality of the line and the brush stroke to capture the forms of nature. In this introductory class I will demonstrate the techniques of sumi-e paintings and you will practice and create a sumi-e landscape painting. I will give individual instruction, tips and ideas.
Supply List:
All materials will be supplied.
Please bring with you:
Two jars for water
Three or four small white ceramic dishes for ink mixing. (Ramekin/soufflé dishes work best!)
A roll of paper towels!
Two small objects to use as paper weights.
If you have a photograph of a particular landscape that you love, please bring it with you! I will also have landscape photographs for you to use as reference.
About the Artist:
Joanna Brown relocated to Portland from England in 2020. She is an experienced teacher and artist. She taught art in schools in England for 20 years and created ArtFlow, an art group, which offered children a creative space to explore and expand their artistic flare. Joanna is a practising artist, specialising in Chinese Brush Painting, Sumi-e Painting and Watercolor.
