Introduction to Watercolor Painting—Susan Pfahl

November 5, 12, 19, & 26 (Tuesdays) 7:00-9:30pm

4 sessions, 2.5 hours each

$120 Members, $140 Non-members, Minimum 1, Maximum 8

Watercolor for beginners.

Each class, we will experiment with how the paint, paper, and water react together. Then we will paint
simple paintings incorporating this “experiment” into our work. Masterpieces are unlikely, but skills will increase.
Returning students are welcome to repeat this course. New projects and techniques will be presented in each subsequent series of this class.
No pre-requisites are required for this class.

Supplies:

Watercolor paints by Daniel Smith or similar: Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna, Ultramarine Blue, Pereylene Red, Hansa Yellow Medium
Other watercolor paints are welcome; bring what you have or like best.

Brushes for watercolor:

  • One 1” Flat
  • One ½” Flat
  • Round brushes, size 2 and size 6, or so

Watercolor Paper Tablet 140#, Cold Press or Rough 10 x 14 or 12 x 16, or similar

A board slightly larger than the watercolor paper (Can be stiff cardboard wrapped in plastic wrap and
taped to keep water away from it.) I use a Masonite board.

Plastic palette such as Richeson 8 well slant mixing tray (An old, plastic ice cube tray works too!)
Nicer, but more expensive is a Blick Covered Palette or similar.

Masking Fluid

White Artists’ Tape (optional)

Two water containers. (I use old Yogurt containers)

Pencil and white or gum eraser.

Paper towels.

Other items may be suggested in class but are not required.
If you have watercolor supplies, please bring what you already have
