Joanna Brown : Sumi-e ( Japanese ink painting) ( Bamboo and Flowers )

Class Details: Sumi-e means black ink painting. Using black ink and creating a white space on the paper, you will paint spontaneously to capture the spirit of nature. The focus of the art of sumi-e painting is on the quality of the line and the brush stroke to capture the forms of nature. In this class I will demonstrate the techniques of sumi-e painting and you will practice and create a sumi-e painting of bamboo and/or flowers. I will give individual instruction, tips and ideas.
Supply List:
All materials will be supplied.
Please bring with you :
Two jars for water
Three or four small white ceramic dishes for ink mixing. (White Ramekin/soufflé dishes work best!)
A roll of Kitchen paper towel!
Two small objects to use as paper weights.
If you have Chinese Brushes and white felt please bring them, although brushes and felt will be available to use.
About the Artist:
I relocated to Portland from England in 2020. I am an experienced teacher and artist. I taught art in schools in England for 20 years and created ArtFlow, an art group, whichoffere d children a creative space to explore and expand their artistic flare. I am currently a Special Education Classified Teacher in a Middle School in Hillsboro and continue to paint, specializing in Chinese Brush Painting, Sumi-e Painting and Watercolor.
