Diane Shingledecker

I am an artisan basket weaver who has lived in Oregon for over 20 years.  After taking early retirement, I am currently pursuing my “second act” of weaving on a more full-time basis.  Over the past ten years, basketry has become a mindful practice that has helped me find balance in uncertain times as well as a means of joyful expression.  I have always loved playing with textures and colors; I now have the freedom to explore both of these to a greater extent in my weaving.

I strive to use sustainable, natural materials and have recently begun using tea bags, Oregon black walnuts, onion skins, etc. to stain my reed.  I source local materials whenever possible and have stripped bark from local cedar trees that I then dried & wove into my work.

I tend to weave big pieces; however, I am exploring making smaller bags & totes that incorporate my stained materials as well as hemp and yarn.  I love that the design and material possibilities in basket weaving are seemingly endless!

In addition to being an active member of the Village Gallery of Arts, I am a member of the Columbia Basin Basketry Guild (CBBG).
